There were three articles in the NY Daily News that offered hints as to what’s to come in regards to the Brett Favre phenomena since being traded to the NY Jets.  In his introductory press conference, his star power…

 was in full evidence.

RIch Cimini’s article in today’s NY Daily News (“Brett Favre flies into Cleveland for Jets action, press conference“)  gives a detail-rich accounting to the atmosphere that surrounded legendary quarterback Brett Favre’s arrival.

Being surrounded by swarming photographers and onlookers is one thing.  But check out Brett Favre’s demeanor while being interviewed during his press conference.  He was contrite when talking about the circumstances that lead to him becoming a NY Jet (coming out of retirement, demanding he released or traded to a team of his choice, etc…) and while reading of his press conference, a moment stood out to me.

When admitting he was out of shape, Brett Favre claimed to be “looking forward” to Friday’s mandatory conditioning test at The NY Jets facility at Hofstra and when he did that he gave a exaggerated wink to the audience.

Drawing laughs from everyone apparently.  All jokes aside, that gesture is a classic move that endears one to people.

Icons don’t appear out of nowhere though.  Bob Raismann has an article (“Brett has media game plan“) in today’s NY Daily News where he writes about Brett Favre’s tactics for dealing with the media.   In essence, he gives quality “access” to select members of the national football TV media as opposed to local journalists.

Bob Raismann even quotes Garry Howard, Assisting Managing Editor/Sports of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.  Garry Howard said,

“(Brett Favre) already insulated himself (from the media) well enough.  He knows what he’s doing…” — Garry Howard on Brett Favre’s holding local media at bay while currying favor with national journalists.

In his story, Bob Raismann tells the reader what to expect now that Brett Favre is in the tri-state area.  It sure should be interesting.

Columnist Mike Lupica also offered an interesting take on Brett Favre being traded to the NY Jets.  In his column (“Jets back to show business with acquisition of Brett Favre“),  Mike Lupica quotes an old show business agent Sonny Werblin when he said,

“If there was one thing I learned, it’s that the only thing worse than death is when they stop talking about you.”  –Sonny Werblin

Classic and true show-biz wisdom.  Mike Lupica was referencing the tale of what Sonny Werblin saw in old Jets quarterback Joe Namath that compelled him to not only draft him but pay him the then-unprecedented sum of $400,000.  In the story, Lupica feels that the Favre trade is representative of the NY Jets trying to put themselves on the MAP and not only thinking of the sports business, but SHOW business.
