Sports Broadcasters deny deny deny that the fix is in…

Did a lot of gee-whizing a 2 weeks ago as I listened to sports talk radio personalities on WFAN-AM like Chris ‘Mad Dog’ Russo voice their disbelief of ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy’s allegations of NBA manipulations as far as league officials exerting too much pressure
over referees and attempting to control over the outcome of games.
Disgraced ex-referee Tim Donaghy alleged that NBA executives asked that referees provide superstars with favorable calls -or non calls- in order to extend playoff series and to ensure that ‘popular’ teams move on further in the playoffs. All in the name of generating bigger ratings and interest.
Keep in mind that the public realizing that the fix is in is BAD for the business of sports talk radio or sports journalism. If the credibility of any major sports league falls or is questioned by the public, there won’t be much to talk about with said sport. Never forget that. So those sports talk guys CAN’T believe what supposed whistle-blowers proclaim.
There was a column by Eric Barrow in the Sunday, June 15, 2008 edition of The NY Daily News Eric Barrow (“The oldest trick on the tube”) that should offer some perspective.
