In the Sunday June 22, 2008 issue of The NY Daily News, Albor Ruiz wrote an intriguing article on one religious leader’s effort to end hate speech against immigrants. He writes about Rev. Schaper, who is…
Rev. Schaper is a senior minister at Judson Memorial Church in the West Village in New York City. She points out that the essence of her quest is to try and reframe the presentation of immigrants in the media. I can’t help but begin to wonder, well how are immigrants presented by the media? How do radio/tv talk-show hosts, journalists, columinists, and overall movers and shakers in mass media (and the arts) help shape the image of immigrants and how they come across? How do social conditions (the economy, job rate) and the pressures they influence factor in when thinking of immigrants?
Hell, what about 9/11? Anybody remember that day? There IS anti-American sentiment out there that Americans CANNOT avoid and must surely contribute to the bunker mentality encouraged by right-wing or conservative types like say Bill O ‘Reilly or Sean Hannity.
Do people like Rev. Donna Schaper and her organization The New York New Sanctuary Movement For The Protection Of Immigrants consider this?
Any comments? Any thoughts you’d like to share?
